Fiesta of Short Films

A fiesta of short films from all over the world and the only international short film competition festival featuring international trends in short films in Korea, the 3rd Asiana International Short Film Festival (AISFF2005) will be held from November 2 to 7 (Wednes-Mon) at Cinecore, Seoul.

This year, a total of 1,053 short films were submitted, and Of these, 55 were chosen for the International Competition section. Another 33 short films that have become sensational hits in their countries of origin were chosen for the Special Program section. Truly, AISFF2005 promises to be the most colorful and lively short film festival ever in the history of the event and of the global short film industry!

Film festivals have become so popular all over the world. Through the years, the number and quality of film festivals with creative concepts have improved tremendously, and the number of films participating in these film festivals has also seen a dramatic growth. All these wonderful developments, however, pertain mainly to feature films. Despite the thriving film industry and the numerous film festivals that are being held in the country, the chances that short films will appeal to the general public are still slim. Yet short films can easily impress their audiences with their boundless creativity, daring experimental filmmaking techniques, and simple but brilliant messages. Those who have discovered the joys of watching short films will be very happy to know that the 3rd Asiana International Short Film Festival (AISFF) will be held in Seoul on November 2, 2005 (Wednes).

AISFF2005 to be participated in by short film directors from the largest number of countries ever
Now on its third year, AISFF is steadily gaining recognition as an international short film competition festival. To illustrate this, from only 656 short films submitted in the 1st AISFF, the number rose to 821 in the 2nd AISFF, and then to a staggering 1,053 this year. The number of participating countries has also increased—from 18 in the 1st AISFF to 37 in the 2nd, and to 43 this year. Aside from the 250 short films from Asia, 87 from America, 12 from Australia, and 7 from the Middle East have been submitted, making up a colorful spectrum, and signifying the growing interest and confidence of the world¡¯s best short filmmakers in AISFF.

After a very strict screening, 55 short films from among the 1,053 that were submitted advanced to the final list of short films in the International Competition section. As the competition ratio has risen by leaps and bounds, it is believed that the audiences will be viewing films with a much higher quality. Since those short films that have already garnered awards in other film festivals have been put together in the Special Program section, the 55 short films that will compete against one another in the International Competition section are the newest, hottest, and most sensational in the global short film circuit.
This is a rare and valuable opportunity for the short film lovers out there, and even for the uninitiated, to see the latest ¡°babies¡± of the world¡¯s most talented short filmmakers, whose refreshing wisdom and clever wit will surely enrich you. The world¡¯s best short filmmakers come to Korea and showcase their opus to Korean audiences here at AISFF.

Do not miss the Special Program section-a stunning collection of recently awarded and acclaimed short films from all over the world.

Aside from the 55 short films that have been chosen as finalists in the International Competition section, AISFF2005 will give the Korean audiences the special privilege of viewing high-quality foreign, short master films never before shown in the country in the festival¡¯s Special Program section.
Further split into the World-Wide and Asian-Wide divisions, the Special Program section highlights the current trends in short filmmaking in different parts of the world, as well as the interesting localities where these Special Program short films were shot.

The World-Wide division consists of trendsetting short film masterpieces that you just cannot afford to miss if you have more than an average interest in the global trends and directions in the field of short filmmaking and/or in works that have become sensational successes. This division is further subdivided into the following three subsections: the ¡°Those Who Love Shorts¡± subsection already boast of five short films, where major actors and actresses like French actor Vincent Cassel, Mathieu Kassovitz, and Korean-Canadian actress Sandra Oh appear. The ¡°Best Shorts Collection¡± is an ultimate collection of major award-winning short films from the Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival, the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, and other prestigious film festivals the world over. Finally, the ¡°Africa, African!¡± subsection is a rare treat of works by African short film directors, showcasing the vivid realities in Africa with fictional and documentary genres as their medium.

The Asian-Wide section is a dynamic festival for Asian short films. ¡°Asian_aSpect 1: Asian Trend¡± is a section with recently completed commercial advertisement films and short films by the cine-artists who represent the contemporary Asian film scene. One of the films in this subsection, <Focus: This Moment>, is a mind-numbing omnibus film made by no less than eight Chinese filmmakers, including Zhang Ke Jia and Xiaoshuai Wang, each of whom contributed to the film a 3¡¯30¡± short film where they reveal their respective ¡°decisive moments¡± with the use of unique styles.
¡°Asian_aSpect 2: Between Actor and Director¡± showcases two films: <How Do The Blind Dream?> by Ji Tae Yoo and <TORI> by Tadanobu Asano, which allow us to feel traces of the emotions of these two leading personalities in the Asian film scene, who are both directors and actors.
Finally, the ¡°Eastern Aura¡± subsection will invite you to enter the world of imagination in Asian films: fantasies and animated films based on legends or folk tales containing distinctly Eastern contents. <Face Flower> by Lin Gong shows the process of making 3D spaces using paper cut through traditional techniques. Haja Visual Rave¡¯s <If HuhNanseolheon met Li Qing Zhao> is an imaginary travelogue, leading the viewer to go back in time a thousand years so as to meet the female poets Huh from the Joseon Dynasty and Li Qing Zhao from the Song dynasty.

As if these film features are not enough to give you a thrill, AISFF2005 has prepared another surprise for you! Your short-film-filled flight will go on deep into the night! The Midnight Screen section, dubbed ¡°Night Flight,¡± will offer a special screening of critically acclaimed films included in the AISFF2005 Special Program section. This is the ultimate jam of the festival, where you can view all the excellent films from the six subsections of the Special Program section in one truly memorable night.
